Major or Minor in Jewish Studies

B.A. IN JEWISH STUDIES

PREPARATION FOR MAJOR:

Required: Jewish Studies M10 or two courses from Middle Eastern Studies 50A, 50B, 50C (formerly Near Eastern 50A, 50B, 50C); Ancient Near East 10W and one year of language (near eastern language preferred, but not required).

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer applicants to the Jewish Studies major with 90 or more units must complete the following introductory course prior to admission to UCLA: one social, cultural, and religious institutions of Judaism course. Refer to the UCLA Transfer Admission Guide for up-to-date information regarding transfer selection for admission.

Study in Israel

HEBREW AND JEWISH STUDIES MINOR

To enter the Hebrew and Jewish Studies minor, students must have an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better, have completed Hebrew 1A, 1B, 1C, or the equivalent as determined by the department, and file a petition in 376 Kinsey Hall, (310) 825-4165.

Required Upper Division Courses (28 units): Seven courses from the Hebrew or Jewish studies section of the department; 199 courses may not be applied. With approval of the undergraduate adviser and based on course content, two of the seven courses may be taken outside the department.

All minor courses must be taken for a letter grade, with an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better. Successful completion of the minor is indicated on the transcript and diploma.

The minor in Israel Studies is designed for students interested in adding to their major a particular focus on Israel. Comprised of coursework that serves to create a broad introductory foundation of familiarity with Israeli history, society, politics, and culture, the minor might be appropriate for students from a wide range of majors, including, but not limited to, History, Political Science, Art, Study of Religion, Film and Media Studies, Comparative Literature, Jewish Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and more.

The Israel Studies Minor is administered by the Department of Near Eastern languages and Cultures (NELC). To enter the minor, students must have an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better and must file a petition with SAO Tiffany Chen. chen@humnet.ucla.edu
