This talk looks particularly at Hettie Jones’ memoir of her marriage to the poet LeRoi Jones/ Amiri Baraka, How I Became Hettie Jones (1990), Lore Segal’s novel Her First American (1985), and Gary Shteyngart’s recent Super Sad True Love Story (2010) to show the conjoined histories of gender and race in Jewish American culture during the period.
About the Speaker: JENNIFER GLASER is Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature in the University of Cincinnati. Her research and teaching interests include 20th and 21st century American literature, comparative ethnicity, diasporic and transnational studies, Jewish studies, gender and sexuality, digital humanities, and comics and the graphic novel. She is presently completing work on a manuscript entitled Exceptional Differences: Race, Chosenness, and the Postwar Jewish American Literary Imagination.
